Menlo Park

Welcome to Menlo Park 

Menlo Park got its name from a pair of 19th-century landowners who printed it on an archway leading to their property. When the San Francisco and San Jose rail line arrived in 1863, someone saw that archway and decided "Menlo Park" would work as the new station's name too. That station is still one of the oldest in California.

The city grew slowly at first, about 5,000 residents by the mid-20th century, then 26,000 by 1960, as its large early estates were subdivided into neighborhoods. One of the last of these, a 574-acre property once owned by Frederick Sharon, became Sharon Heights in the 1960s, complete with its own country club. Today, Menlo Park is made up of 16 distinct districts, ranging from quiet and residential to dense and urban, with a population that's settled around 35,000.

Menlo Park's Silicon Valley ties run deep. The Stanford Research Institute, now SRI International, was founded here in 1947, and Meta (formerly Facebook) has been headquartered at 1 Meta Way since 2011, on the former Sun Microsystems campus. Sand Hill Road, which runs along the city's southern edge, is still considered the highest concentration of venture capital firms anywhere in the world, home to firms like Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins.

Downtown, Santa Cruz Avenue is genuinely walkable, with independent shops, restaurants, and a busy events calendar that includes an annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Menlo Summer Fest (long known as the Connoisseurs' Marketplace), a decades-old summer arts and food festival that still draws crowds from across the Peninsula. Just west of downtown, the Allied Arts Guild has been home to working artist studios, gardens, and a tea room since 1928, and it's still one of the more charming places on the Peninsula to spend an afternoon.

One local landmark worth knowing the history of: the Cliff May-designed campus that housed Sunset magazine's headquarters from 1951 until 2015. Sunset has since moved its operations elsewhere, and the seven-acre Willow Road property, since recognized as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, is currently the subject of a development proposal that could reshape it entirely. It's a reminder that even in a town that prizes its small-town feel, change is a constant conversation here.

Schools are a major draw. The Menlo Park City School District, which includes Oak Knoll, Laurel, and Encinal elementary schools plus Hillview Middle School, consistently ranks in the top 5% of California school districts. Most Menlo Park students continue on to Menlo-Atherton High School, part of the Sequoia Union High School District.

Menlo Park is one of those cities where the right neighborhood really depends on what you're solving for: proximity to Sand Hill Road, a specific elementary school boundary, or a walkable downtown.
